Glossary

Some useful terminology used in the design and printing industry.

  • JPEG:This is a system used for compressing images, which stands for Joint Photographic Experts Group.
  • EPS:An Encapsulated Postscript File supports vector-based and raster artwork. This can be edited for text or clipping paths.
  • PDF:Unlike the EPS, the text or fonts and images are embedded. This Portable Document Format can be viewed universally by most computers.
  • TIFF:Tagged Image File Format is a file format for mainly storing images, including photographs and line art.
  • CMYK:Cyan/Magenta/Yellow and Black (K stands for Key). This colour model is based on mixing pigments of the CMYK colours in order to make other colours.
  • Spot Colour:Colour reproduced on press by using a special (already mixed) ink of the exact colour wanted, rather than being reproduced by mixing different percentages of the primary colours cyan, magenta, yellow and black.
  • UV Varnish:UV Varnish is a heavy, high gloss, matt or satin varnish applied after printing and cured in a specialist ultra-violet dryer.
  • Standard Paper Sizes:Main series of finished printing trimmed sizes in the ISO international paper size range.
